Swap, or paging, is a method of increasing the amount of available memory by using disk space as extra memory. Rarely used pages of physical memory is swapped to disk and is freed for other use. The combined sizes of the physical memory and the swap space is the amount of virtual memory available.
Linux supports swapping to disk partitions and files.
